Location & Area
In the heart of Tuscany, next to the small village of Marcialla (Certaldo - Barberino val d'Elsa), at only 35 kilometres south of Florence and 38 km north of Siena, the Relais Hotel Villa Tavolese is in the Chianti region known as Chianti Colli Fiorentini. The tranquillity of the area will ensure a pleasant and relaxing stay and, at the same time, the nearness to the most attractive Tuscan places as Florence 35 kms, Siena 38 kms, San Gimignano 25 kms, Volterra 30 kms, Pisa 70 kms, permits fine daily visits. The area oozes charm and character, we strongly recommend a visit to nearby Montespertoli – the City of Wine (only 5 kms away), with breathtaking views of the vineyards, olive groves and castles offering wine tasting facilities.
Certaldo : It was the home of the family of Giovanni Boccaccio, who died and was buried here in 1375. Boccaccio's house, of red brick, like the other old houses here, was restored in 1823 and furnished with old furniture. A statue of him was erected in the main square in 1875. The Palazzo Pretorio, or Vicariale, the residence of the Florentine governors, recently restored to its original condition, has a picturesque facade adorned with ceramic coats of arms, and in the interior are various frescoes dating from the 13th to the 16th century. The town hosts several festivals a year. The largest and most famous is Mercantia, a week-long party in Certaldo Alto. It involves numerous street performers from across Italy, Europe and even the Americas.
Tavarnelle Val di Pesa : The main attraction of the territory of Tavarnelle is the Badia di Passignano (Abbey of Passignano), a monastery existing from the High Middle Ages. Church of Santa Lucia al Borghetto, part of a Franciscan monastery known from 1260. The church is an example of Gothic architecture. Gothic church of Madonna della Neve, with 14th-15th century frescoes. Church of Santa Maria del Carmine al Morrocco (15th century). Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Pietracupa, founded in 1596, with a Madonna image frescoed by Paolo Schiavo. Pieve of San Pietro in Bossolo, a Romanesque church known from 990, housing works from Roman, Byzantine and Florentine schools. Villa di Poggio Petroio, outside the town. The pieve of San Donato in Poggio (12th century), in Romanesque style, with a basilica plan with a nave and two aisles and three apses. It houses a baptism shell by Giovanni della Robbia (1513) and a triptych by Giovanni del Biondo (1375). Bridge over the Pesa River in the frazione of Sambuca. Tignano is a fortified hamlet whose church of San Romolo houses a terracotta tabernacle by Giovanni della Robbia.
